Welcome to the Val Verde Cinematic Universe

What is the Val Verde Cinematic Universe?[]

It is an unofficial cinematic universe comprised of films that have connections to, references of, or taken place within the fictional Latin American country of Val Verde.  The country was created by screenwriter Steven E. de Souza for 1985’s Arnold Schwarzenegger actioner, Commando.   In the film, a former Central American dictator named Arius (Dan Hedaya) wants the man who deposed him from power, Delta Force commando John Matrix (Arnold Schwarzenegger), to assassinate the nation’s current leader.  That nation is the fictional country of the Republic of Val Verde.

How Does the Val Verde Cinematic Universe Work?[]

The Val Verde Cinematic Universe connects its films by characters, items, or locations which co-exist in other movies tying back to the movie Commando, the first movie referencing the Republic of Val Verde.

The cinematic universe, however, is certainly a study in apologetics; not in the religious sense, but in the same definition as a discipline of defense through a theoretic overarching idea. The overarching idea is that through an obvious or logical way these films co-exist with each other. Since the Val Verde Universe is a fictitious universe, the believer of these relationships, in some respects, defies the film creator's original ideas of their film's independence, and it is though these obvious and logical ways the viewer can watch these films in a new light beyond their creator's original imagination.

Similar to its religious roots, the Val Verde Cinematic Universe apologetics are bound by doctrine, or rules.

Rule #1 - The Val Verde Cinematic Universe is a Cinematic Universe. The movies within must have been released in a cinema. No direct to TV movies, no TV shows, and no literature (comic books or otherwise) are allowed. Cartoon Cinematic movies are still up to debate.

Rule #2 - Actors in multiple roles, recurring fictional locations, events and Items that exist in multiple movies should be explained in an apologetic when possible.

Rule #3 - Films in the Val Verde Universe must connect in a Definitive or Strong Way.

Levels of Connection between movies

  1. Definitive (D) - There is definite connection between movies as dictated by the intention of the director, writer, or other creative. For example: Predator 2 was a direct sequel to Predator as intended by its creators.
  2. Strong (S) - There is a strong and obvious connection between films in the form of a fictional location, event, item, or an actor playing multiple rolls. A strong connection should be one of multiple levels of evidence. For example: "Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the same character in Predator and Commando: John "Dutch" Matrix. 1. The visual appearance of each character is identical; 2. Both characters have a military background and are a part of special forces (i.e. Delta Force); 3. Both characters have dealings in the Republic of Val Verde. 4. If the movie Predator is seen as a prequel to the movie Commando, their story lines are consistent and compatible. The apologetic in this situation is that John Matrix's military codename is "Dutch." No where in the film can this apologetic be disproved, credits or otherwise.
  3. Weak (W) - There is a weak connection between the films in which connections are less obvious. A weak connection may be obtained from a single form of evidence. For example: "David Patrick Kelly plays the same character in Commando and 48 Hours: Luther "Sully" Sullivan." 1. Luther in 48 Hours is wearing a military issued crew neck sweater; Sully in Commando references his former military training. The apologetic in this situation is that Luther's last name is Sullivan and "Sully" is his military codename. No where in the film can this apologetic be disproven, however there is only one point of evidence making this connection a weak one. Multiple weak connections however can strengthen the tie between two movies.
  4. Conjecture (C) - The connection between films is purely conjecture, and is based around film and non-fictional evidence. This is typically a fictional story to explain a characters plot between two movies based on other points of evidence. For example: "The Republic of Val Verde splintered off of Guatemala in 1970 during the Guatemalan Civil War." This fact is not directly referenced in any film, however using non-fictional events and extrapolation from evidence from the films, we can come to this conclusion to possibly aid in character arcs in the film. Films can not be connected in the Val Verde Cinematic Universe on conjecture alone.
  5. Historical (H) - This evidence typically comes from non-fictional historical events. For example: "Guatemala was part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala for nearly 330 years." Mere non-fictional historical events are not enough evidence to prove that a film is in the Val Verde Cinematic Universe.

Movies in the VVCU Timelines[]

Research presently suggests that there are Three Timelines in the Val Verde Cinematic Universe.

  1. PRIME (P): The PRIME Timeline follows the technological advancements of the Predator and Alien Franchises. Some refer to this universe as the "Flying Car Universe" as films like Back to the Future II and Blade Runner both exist in it and feature Flying Cars. This universe also contains the "Realer Than Real" Quinton Tarantino universe.
  2. TIMELINE A (A): TIMELINE A began when Biff Tanner from Back to the Future 2 went back in time and gave himself the Sports Almanac in 1955 henceforth changing the past and stunting the technologically advanced future. Some refer to this timeline as the "Present Timeline" as it is the universe we technologically exist in.
  3. TIMELINE B (B): The third timeline is TIMELINE B in which the Timekeeper from Spy Kids: All The Time in the World goes back in time numerously to meet his father, which creates hundreds of parallel timelines. Out of these parallel timelines, two of the Robert Rodriguez "Mexican Trilogy" movies occur. Some call this universe the "Desperado Timeline."
  4. MOVIE WITHIN A MOVIE (M): The Movie Within a Movie are movies that characters in the Val Verde Cinematic Universe watch. These can be either "real" movies that exist Historically or fictional movies that exist merely in the narrative of the Val Verde Cinematic Universe. For Example in "Live Free or Die Hard" a toy of a T-1000 Terminator is seen indicating that characters in the Val Verde Universe watch the Terminator Movies for entertainment making the Terminator Franchise real historical movies in the Movie Within A Movie. A second example is "Jaws 19" featured in "Back to the Future II". This is an example of a fictional movie in the Movie Within A Movie. Another example is the movie "Kill Bill" which was created as a movie that characters in the Tarantino Realer Than Real Universe and subsequently the Val Verde Cinematic Universe watch. Movies in the Movie Within A Movie are not listed here yet, but we hope to add them in at a later date.
